Buying a car straight from the owner
by Jason Lin
Owners are not considered dealers so you have less rights as a consumer. So
if you purchase a car from a owner and it breaks down on you then you
may have no course of action against them.
The advantages
The advantages of buying from the owner is the price will be much cheaper
and you would be getting a bargain. The purchase can happen faster than
when you buy it from the dealer, some purchases happen right on the spot.
The disadvantages
There's no warranties that come with the car. If there's a defect than
you fixing it straight out of your pockets. Also it means the car is used
and no as good when you buy a new or used car from the dealer.
Your options as buyer:
1)Inspect it
Have your mechanic inspect the car for you. That way you can see what
the defects are rather than hearing it from the owner. The owner has right
to refuse, if they do I recommend you don't buy it. They're hiding something.
2)Putting in writing
Oral agreements do not mean a thing when it comes to purchasing cars.
Best way is to have it in writing, that way if a defect occurs than the
owner might be held responsible depending on the circumtances.
