Know
your rights
by Jason Lin
Automoblie Purchase
Buying an automobile can be expensive has a lot of things could go
wrong in the process. In most cases, they do! So know your legal rights
as a buyer. |
There's
a difference between buying a new car, used car,
or a car straight from the owner. You have
more rights if you buy a new car, however if you buy a used car you have
less rights If you buy a used car from the owner than your basically doing
it less rights than the previous options and could be most risky out of
the three. One rule of thumb whether your buying a new or used car, have
it in writing. If they promise you leather seats, make sure its in the
contract. Also don't sign anything until you know for sure the car is
legit.
Buy a new car
from dealer
The first step is Financing the car. See how much you can afford ahead
of time so you know the price range. Lenders will help you figure out
this amount. One good tip is to use no more than 20% of your monthly debt
payments. Dealers may give you a better price if they know what your limits
are. Its important to get the financing done first before you purchase
the car. Matter of fact, don't sign anything or purchase any automobile
until the financing is done. Because if the financing doesn't fall through
after you purchase it, the purchasing contract will require you to pay
a large plenty for each day that had the car in your possession, plus
extra fees for each mile you drove it on.
Your selection
When you are looking for a car be sure to inspect it and test drive it.
Even if you drove the same model at a another car dealer, every car is
different. So be sure to test it out before purchasing it. Most car nowadays
come straight from the factory. This does not mean that its in perfect
shape. Matter of fact, you would be surprised to see the amount of defects.
If you found any defects on the car you ordered, you have the right to
reject that order but here's the catch. The dealer has the right to modify
the car within a "reasonable amount of time". If he makes the
necessary modifications then you must accept the order. The "reasonable
amount of time" can be different depending on the situation, regular
inexpensive cars should be within a week but import cars have a much longer
time frame. If the dealer does not fix the problem within the "reasonable
amount of time" then you have the right to reject order and get a
refund from your down payment.
The warranty
Any new car sold in the U.S. must come with a manufacturer warranty. Most
warranty's have a time frame (ex:12 months) or miles coverage (12,000
miles). Federal and state laws prevent buyers from getting a "lemon"-a
new car with recurring problems. Dealers are required to give a warranty
with new cars.
