Rio
Chino Synopsis
"Rio Chino" tells the
story of a brave man trying to live a coward's life in order to
win the heart of a timid woman. Ultimately, it becomes the story
of a man discovering his own heart -- learning who he is, whom he
really loves, and what he must do.
Our story
begins in 1869 as a Chinese man named Kingsway Law returns home
after three years of working on the railroad to reclaim his wife,
Ah Toy, who now works as a singer in Fat Hing's Chinese Theater.
But Fat Hing demands Kingsway pay a thousand dollars for expenses
before Ah Toy can leave.
Kingsway
could just shoot his way out of the problem. He's had practice,
after all: three years before, he had to leave town after gunning
down the Mexican bandidos who lynched a group of Chinese gold miners.
But when Ah Toy tells Kingsway she won't leave unless he pays his
debts honestly and stays out of trouble, he's forced to find a new
plan.
With a
hero-worshipping Chinese teenager named Jimmy on his tail, Kingsway
returns to his old mining claim along a gravely riverbed. But there's
someone else there: Sonia, a wary Mexican vegetable farmer.
When Jimmy
and Sonia learn there's gold at stake, Kingsway reluctantly agrees
to a three-way partnership. But time is of the essence: Angel, Sonia's
Mexican outlaw lover, is on his way home.
As their
hard work yields results, Kingsway and Sonia bond. But when Jimmy
learns Angel has a habit of lynching Chinese, he demands Kingsway
stand and fight him. In response, Sonia swears to kill anyone who
touches Angel. She tries to convince Kingsway to leave, pointing
out there's no sense in risking his life for a wife he barely knows.
Kingsway's
torn, but he can't leave yet. For better or for worse, he's committed
to Ah Toy. He still needs his thousand dollars. With Angel's arrival
imminent, Kingsway, Sonia, and Jimmy grapple with their destinies,
learning the true meanings of heroism, partnership, and love.

Rio
Chino Director's Notes
"Every kid who grew up in the American West probably has a
picture somewhere of him or herself in a cowboy hat. Asian, Latino,
black, white, sometimes even Native American... kids of all races,
sharing the same dream, tappping into the myth of the American frontier.
Although I was just a scrawny half-Korean kid, I knew I belonged
in that cowboy hat. And years later, I learned I was right -- thousands
of Asians lived in the Old West -- tough Chinese immigrants living
wild, vibrant lives. "Rio Chino" is my tribute to the dream -- the
dream of every kid to belong to the West, and the dream of every
American to buck the odds -- to walk tall, stand firm, and live
true. "-Greg Pak
